As many of you have heard the Republican House has proposed a bill to repeal and replace major portions of the ACA. This bill proposes a regressive path back to a time when health care was unaffordable and inaccessible for millions of people. The modifications to the Medicaid expansion proposed by the bill will hurt low income people and especially low income seniors and the disabled. It will raise the maximum premium that an older individual will pay as compared to a younger individual from the current 3 to 1 ratio to a 5 to 1 ratio. In addition, there is also a proposal to penalize a lapse in coverage that lasts more than 60 days by imposition of a 30% premium increase for a year. So, if you lose your job or are laid off, you will be beaten down even more before you get up. This is the Republican’s proposed replacement for the insurance mandate and will hurt families far more than a simple penalty at the end of the year as it is under current ACA law.
With that being said, these are just a few of the proposals in the bill. Many have come out against this bill including the American Medical Association and the American Hospital Association (these are major lobbying groups). I have already contacted my local representative in my district, Jimmy Panneta (CA). This is a must #Action item. If you do not have the contact information for your local representative please follow the link below to access that information and contact your representative either by email or telephone or BOTH. Let them know how you feel about this and tell them to VOTE NO on the American Health Care Act.
